According to Tantra, two important nerves called Ida (left side) and Pingala (the right side) are twisted around the spinal cord. They are also referred to as moon (cool) nadi or nerve and sun (hot) nadi or nerve. Nervous energy, which is only a form of prana, flows up or down these nerves at a given time and keeps our body healthy and energetic.
At the centre, in the middle of the spinal cord is a vertical nerve called Sushumna. This being very thick, to carry a large flow of energy like a thick cable, it is a bundle of thin nerves, and referred to as a ‘channel’. We can better appreciate it as a thick optical cable, as used by telephone engineers.
Light energy may flow through this and some yogis refer to this as a silvery blue luminescent nerve, quite like an optical fibre!
In Yoga literature, it is stated that this sushumna is normally closed and by certain yogic practices, it is pierced so that spiritual nectar can flow up the channel to the brain or the Sahasrara chakra. All this is a pictorial way of describing the flow of energy to the brain centre, as if a fluid is injected up a hollow tube. In modern terminology, we can understand it in terms of an optical cable carrying energy and information to the head. It is better we avoid the concept of a liquid moving up the channel, as mentioned in traditional literature. The sushumna is normally not activated. Yogic practices help to open up this channel, that is, to send energy and information by a kind of switch we do not understand as of now.
